The New Sheriff In Town?

As I am always reading and looking at new technology, I came across a new phone and operating system, Geeksphone that runs the new mobile Firefox OS. When I saw this video on Firefox OS, I was interested because it is an open-source project and had an interesting dynamic search feature which makes it very different from Apple OS and Android OS.

First, I want to talk a little about Geeksphone, who are they? Geeksphone is a smartphone company based in Madrid, Spain, and shipped their first phone in 2009. Their founders, Javier Agüera and Rodrigo Silva-Ramos believed in an open-source philosophy and wanted to make a powerful smartphone at an affordable price. I gained interest in this company because it is based in Madrid and I am always interested in other technology companies in Spain. The Geeksphone Revolution has all the things you would expect in a modern and powerful smartphone, to view the specs of the phone, click here.

The most important things I look for are processing speed, the ability to multi-task between apps, the quality of the camera, and battery life. One of the best parts of the phone is the price. On the company’s website, it is retailing at €123.14, which is an incredible price for an unlocked phone without a contract. In comparison, I had to do a two-year contract to get my smartphone for “free” while paying about €50 a month. The beauty of this phone is that you can put in any SIM card, use it for international travel, and not be charged for roaming. If you are looking for an affordable unlocked smartphone, this is your answer.

Let’s talk about Firefox OS, open-source, and looking to take on Android and Apple OS for some market share. From the videos I have seen, Firefox OS looks like any mobile OS, all the apps are available to execute and able to create custom pages. The jewel of Firefox OS is the Adaptive App Search. In the demonstration below they perform a variety of searches that could be used in every-day situations and I have to say, it is very impressive. The first search is about the James Bond movie Skyfall. The guy searches for Skyfall and immediately the mobile’s wallpaper changes to a picture of James Bond and apps appear that are related to James Bond. For example, IMDB and Fandango, and when you click the app it goes directly to James Bond. When the guy in the demo clicks on Fandango, he is able to see current movie times and he has the ability to purchase a ticket for an upcoming show. All the apps the populate during the Adaptive Search are not downloaded, instead they are web apps and thus save memory space on the phone. However, if during this Adaptive App Search you discover a new app you want to download, it is easy, simple, and fast. You simply long hold the app and download it, how easy is that? Not only are your searches dynamic but you will be able to find the information you are looking for faster and also find new apps that maybe you didn’t know existed. With these apps in the Adaptive App Search, you can try the app before you download it. Once again this Adaptive App Search is the crown jewel of Firefox OS.

After reading about both Geeksphone and Firefox OS, I must say I am very impressed with both and my next phone will most likely be a Geeksphone. I like the affordability while not sacrificing on smartphone capabilities. Another great selling point is not being handcuffed by a phone contract. The ability to dual boot the phone to Android or Firefox OS is another great feature although I would run Firefox OS because of the Adaptive App Search capability. If you are looking for a great affordable phone while running an OS that is unique, smooth and dynamic, look no further: Geeksphone Revolution with Firefox OS should be your next phone.
